GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION
Scientific instruments, models and apparatus, including sundials, early mathematical, surveying, astronomical and optical instruments, and teaching models.
PROVENANCE RESEARCH
As part of a broader study of Mr Whipple's purchases and the provenance of his collection, the Whipple Museum, with the help of Dr Adam Mosley (Trinity College, Cambridge), conducted a preliminary review of those instruments acquired by Mr Whipple between 1933 and 1953 (the year of his death).
Because of the nature of the material in the collections, it is unlikely that the Whipple Museum holds any spoliated artefacts; our provenance review excluded objects acquired by Mr Whipple prior to 1933 and objects created after 1945.
