Post war British Art.
Small number of pre 1933 acquisitions.

INITIAL FOCUS FOR RESEARCH
99 works bequeathed to the Gallery by Arthur Tilden Jeffress. Eligible works from the bequest are now published on the web. Known provenance is included.

Post graduate, museum studies work placement students have carried out some initial research on the bequest, which has included contact with European museums and the Commission for Looted Art in Europe. More provenance research on individual works will be undertaken in the future.

A further list of works, covering the rest of the Permanent Collection, acquired from 1933 to the present day and made prior to 1945 has been established. This list is now published on the web with the known provenance included.

ARCHIVES
Southampton City Art Gallery's Archives have been divided into two separate parts. Southampton City Council Archive Services hold material relating to the foundation and early history of the Art Gallery from 1911 to the 1950's. It also holds correspondence and other material on early acquisitions including the period relevant to spoliation, specifically relating to the two Bequest funds: The Chipperfield Bequest Fund (1911) and the Smith Bequest Fund (1925). Records of early exhibitions 1939-c.1950's are also held there. The service is open to the public Tuesdays-Fridays, 9.30am - 4.30pm, telephone (023) 8083 2251

The City Art Gallery manages a secondary archive which is accessible through appointment with the Registrar, telephone (023) 8083 2152,
email clare.mitchell@southampton.gov.uk. This archive contains material on the history of the gallery, temporary exhibitions from c.1950's to the present day, in and out loans, acquisitions from c.1950's to the present day, education programmes and events, other projects, publications, administration, staffing and finance.
