GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION
The Castle Museum is the largest of the 12 museums in the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service with collections of Fine Art, Decorative Art, Archaeology, Natural History and Social History. Overall there are approximately 3 million objects in the county collections. The bulk of the fine art collection is at Norwich Castle and consists of 1200 paintings and 10,000 drawings and watercolours. These are mainly by artists of the Norwich School, most notably the R.J. Colman bequest 1946. It is highly unlikely that any of this collection ever left the UK.

RESEARCH
Research has been undertaken in the area of Norwich School Fine Art - paintings and drawings and non-Norwich School. Lists of works with broken provenances were published in May 2001. Since then searches have been widened to include decorative art and archaeology which has resulted in the addition of one piece of medieval sculpture to the original list.
2. RESEARCH IN TARGET AREAS
METHOD OF RESEARCH
The Castle Museum and Art Gallery fine art old master prints and drawings - manual and computerised records have been searched. Nine works have been identified for which no firm provenance could be established during the critical period, and the list was published in May 2001.
Curators of branch museums with art collections (King's Lynn, Yarmouth, Thetford out of 12 museums in the county service) have been asked for information about possible material to be included but these collections have been identified as limited to works of local relevance only.
