GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION
Comprises the Walker Art Gallery, The Liverpool Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum, Museum of Liverpool Life, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Sudley House, the Conservation Centre and the HM Customs & Excise National Museum
1. OVERALL PLANS
A Areas which could contain looted itemsForeign Schools' works in the Walker Art gallery.
B Areas excluded and whyScientific, archaeological, maritime and social history objects not relevant. Lady Lever Art Gallery collections acquired prior to 1933. Sudley House collections acquired prior to 1896. British and foreign prints and decorative Bronzes at the Walker have been excluded as their provenances are difficult to validate owing to their production in multiples. The Decorative Arts collections (originally part of Liverpool Museum but in 1986 transferred to the Walker) consist of predominantly British material with British provenances. Most of the outstanding non-British items came with the Mayer collection in 1851.
C Target areas and timetable for research
- Ninety five items (29 paintings, 36 drawings and water colours, and 30 sculptures) where provenance may be uncertain between 1933-1945.
- The museum plans to check the provenance of British paintings due course.
- Provenance research has been completed for outstanding items of Continental Decorative Arts acquired since 1945.
British Paintings in the Walker Art Gallery:
- Victorian and Edwardian paintings have been catalogued and published: provenances are fully researched
- Earlier British paintings and 20th century British paintings; here the cataloguing programme is in progress with the next volume planned for 2006, however, research to date reveals almost exclusively British provenances
- British watercolours; initial research suggests almost exclusively British provenances
These will be researched in connection with a catalogue research programme.
