All natural history (botany, zoology, geology) acquired from local sites or surveys.

The first phase of research on the provenances of the German Expressionist Art and European Oil Painting collections (excluding British) is complete.

RESOURCE IMPLICATIONS
Lack of resources means that it is not possible to undertake further research at this stage.

ARCHIVES
Leicester City Council has been responsible for a Museums Service since 1849. From 1974 to 1997 Leicester Museums were part of Leicestershire Museums, Arts & Records Service. In April 1997 Leicester City Council achieved unitary status and resumed responsibility for 13 museums, historic buildings and sites. Its collections cover the major traditional disciplines of Geology, Biology, Fine Art, Decorative Arts, Costume & Textiles, Archaeology, Social History and Science & Technology.

A central archive for the period prior to 1974 (ref. no. 4D'56) is held at the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland, located in Long Street, Wigston, Leics. LE18 2AH.

Centralised information on collections, covering the period from 1849 until the present is held at:
New Walk Museum, 53 New Walk, Leicester LE1 7EA.

Curatorial sections based in different museums of the Service also retain their own records including daybooks and history files.
