THE ARCHIVES OF THE FERENS ART GALLERY
These consist of:
. The administrative and exhibition records, including past exhibition catalogues, of the Ferens Art Gallery from its opening in 1927 to the present day.
. Limited administrative and exhibition records, including some past exhibition catalogues, of the old Hull art galleries at the Albion Street Museum and the City Hall prior to the opening of the Ferens Art Gallery in 1927.
. History files for each artwork held in the collection of the Ferens Art Gallery, together with a limited amount of files relating to artworks no longer held by the Gallery (eg. paintings destroyed during the Blitz)
. The History Files include such information as acquisition details, exhibition history etc. Amongst them is a small selection of original artists' letters.
Most of these records are available to the public: only sensitive material, such as confidential donor information, is withheld. The Ferens does not have a Librarian or Archivist, so no catalogue or database exists of the records held. There are also elements that are still to be sorted and categorised.
Access to the records described above is at the gallery and by appointment only, Mon-Sat 10.00am - 5.00pm: contact the Assistant Keeper of Art:
