GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION

1. OVERALL PLANS

PARTS OF COLLECTION EXCLUDED
In general we are excluding items acquired before 1933 and created after 1945; collections with British provenance or from British archaeological or natural history sources, as well as items acquired directly from archaeological sites or commissioned works. Works by British artists and those sold by British dealers and auction houses are evaluated to ensure that they were not affected by sale or trade in Europe since 1933. We are explicitly excluding items considered to be valued at less than £200 each.

INITIAL FOCUS FOR RESEARCH
The introductory investigation of the provenance of the objects in the
collection covered all paintings, drawings and watercolours. The
investigation did not cover the print collection and, for reasons of
priority, did not include British art as it is unlikely that these works would have left the country in the period 1933-45.

In the Burrell Collection, the initial investigation gave priority to the
paintings and works on paper (some 700 works in total).
Work is continuing into the provenance of the stained glass and
will be published in a future update. The tapestry list is now available. Further studies will investigate other areas of the Collection and these too will be published in future updates.

TIMESCALE FOR RESEARCH
Given the enormous range of material requiring spoliation checks, we would expect it to take a further five years to complete spoliation checks on all areas of the collection.

Since the last report Glasgow Museums has been re-structured. The service now has a Major Projects and Research Manager with a staff of four Research Managers covering the disciplines: Art, Technology, History and Natural History. A key aim of this new department is the research and publication of the objects in the collection. In addition we now have a Librarian who, like the Research Managers, is based at our new Resource Centre at 200 Woodhead Road, Nitshill, Glasgow G53 7NN.

2. RESEARCH PLANNED IN TARGET AREAS

METHOD OF RESEARCH
Generally a separate check, though it is woven into ongoing inventory and documentation projects in each of the areas. We are in the process of computerising our object records and that transfer is dominating activities of our registration department at the present time.
